We are seeking a Senior HV Plant Engineer with in-depth knowledge of National Grid standards and significant experience across the full project lifecycle to join our growing engineering team
Role Overview
The Senior HV Plant Engineer will lead technical delivery of HV substation plant designs (400kV/275kV/132kV), ensuring compliance with National Grid specifications and best practice. You will take responsibility for design coordination, technical assurance, and mentoring junior engineers, supporting projects from feasibility through to construction and commissioning.
What will you be doing?
• Carry out short circuit and load flow calculations, power system analysis.
• Prepare protection, transformer, and HV switchgear datasheets and specifications.
• Prepare Design Intent Documentation Primary Layout Design (HV Plant AIS and GIS) Works
• Develop single line diagrams, primary layouts, elevations, and phasing diagrams.
• Produce mechanical and electrical interlock diagrams.
• Complete earthing calculations, earthing grid (MES) layouts, and HV equipment earthing details.
• Design conductor and connector layouts, elevations, and schedules.
• Produce HV cable scheme routes, installation details, and cable calculations.
• Produce impressed voltage plans and staged drawings. Application of National Grid / Client Specifications & Procedures
• Apply detailed knowledge of NG technical procedures: SR106, SR135, SR234, SR183, NGET BP137, NGET BP153, NGET BP184, SR188, NGET BP219.
• Interpret NG Policy Statements and Design Handbooks (DH10, DH11, DH18, DH24).
• Ensure compliance with TS specifications (TS1, TS2.1, TS3.1.1–3.1.4). General Engineering & Design Management
• Incorporate design processes and conduct risk assessments.
• Participate in design/project reviews.
• Apply CDM 2015 requirements, including designer’s risk assessments.
What are we looking for?
• Degree in Electrical Engineering (or equivalent).
• Extensive HV plant design experience (400kV/275kV/132kV) in substation projects.
• Strong working knowledge of National Grid design standards, specifications, and governance.
• Proven ability to lead design teams and coordinate across disciplines.
• Proficiency with design software (AutoCAD)
• Strong stakeholder management, communication, and leadership skills.
