Lead Design Engineer
About Us
Part of the Ethical Power Group, GTDS is a specialist power and infrastructure design and construct company, delivering end-to-end EPC solutions for high-voltage substations, transmission, and distribution networks across the UK. We partner with National Grid and other utilities to deliver safe, compliant, and sustainable energy infrastructure. We are seeking an experienced Lead Engineer with deep technical knowledge of National Grid standards, processes, and governance to play a pivotal role in managing the engineering delivery of major infrastructure projects.
Role Overview
As Lead Engineer, you will provide technical leadership and oversight across the full project lifecycle – from feasibility, design, and approval through to construction, commissioning, and handover. You will ensure that all engineering activities are delivered safely, compliantly, and to the highest quality, meeting both client and statutory requirements.
What will you be doing?
• Lead the engineering delivery of complex power and infrastructure projects, ensuring compliance with National Grid Technical Specifications (NGTS), Grid Code, and UK standards.
• Act as the primary technical interface with National Grid, supporting design approvals, technical governance, and assurance processes.
• Manage and review multi-disciplinary design packages, ensuring constructability, quality, and alignment with project objectives.
• Provide engineering leadership to project teams, including mentoring junior engineers and coordinating with external consultants, contractors and suppliers.
• Support project planning, risk management, and value engineering initiatives.
• Drive technical innovation and digital engineering practices to improve efficiency and delivery. • Ensure adherence to internal design manuals and quality management procedures.
• Ensure all designs and works meet CDM Regulations, health & safety requirements, and environmental standards.
• Lead technical reviews, HAZOP/HAZID workshops, and engineering risk assessments.
• Support construction testing, commissioning, and energisation activities in line with National Grid protocols.
What are we looking for?
• Degree in Engineering (Electrical/Civil/P&C) or equivalent experience
• Proven experience delivering National Grid power transmission projects (400kV / 275kV / 132kV substations and associated infrastructure).
• Strong understanding of NGSR, SR188, SR135, SR234, NGET BP137 Engineering Policy & Guidance (EPG), and Grid Code compliance.
• Track record of leading engineering teams in a design & construct environment.
• Multi-disciplinary exposure (civil, structural, protection & control)
• Knowledge of UK regulatory frameworks, including CDM 2015, environmental legislation, and health & safety standards.
• Excellent stakeholder management skills with the ability to interface effectively with National Grid, DNOs, contractors, and regulators.
• Experience in commissioning and energisation processes for high-voltage assets.
